Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the world's highest peak at Mount Everest. Among other firsts on this day, Wisconsin became the thirtieth state in 1848 and Discovery became the first space shuttle to dock with the International Space Station in 1999. On a more personal note, what were some of your first memories of Martha’s Vineyard? If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Website delays
The Steamship Authority announced its long-delayed new website won’t launch before September. Despite a ballooning budget, the ferry service’s new website has been under development for 2 ½ years. Islanders say they are frustrated by the current website, and mystified as to why it’s taking so long to replace it. Read more here.
Tisbury limits business vehicles near homes
Tisbury voters changed the zoning bylaw to limit how many business vehicles tradespeople can park at their homes within residential districts. A Tisbury tradesperson running a business out of their home can now park up to two business vehicles and one trailer. This limit was set by voters at town meeting, with many voters looking forward to the bylaw reducing noise pollution. However, the select board members felt the bylaw proposal was ill-prepared and some residents worry that businesses have difficulty finding affordable lots. Read about town meeting here.

Herring runs trickle in
A few decades ago, Martha’s Vineyard used to boast vibrant herring runs, but much like other facets of the Island, things have changed. Creeks no longer run silver, "herring snot" doesn’t coat the water’s surface, and many of the fish don’t return to their natal ponds to spawn. Local stewards of the Island’s few herring runs blame overfishing by offshore trawlers that net river herring as "bycatch." This spring, they’ve collected genetic samples to prove just that. Quote of the Day
"We removed 16,000 pounds last year but could not quite get it all. This year is just cleaning up the last major piles of lobster traps, which were much smaller than what we tackled in 2023."
—Laura Ludwig, director of the Marine Debris & Plastics Program at the Center for Coastal Studies, on this year’s
Cuttyhunk beach cleanup

Hot Topic Comment
"This is really awful news. Plastics have taken over our lives and our bodies. It’s even been detected in breast milk. Giving residents bottled water which themselves have microplastics in them may not be a helpful temporary solution."
—Laurie David on closed West Tisbury landfill found as a source of PFAS

Hot Topic Letter
"I know my old Islander point of view is outnumbered by so many who don’t remember what came before. I respect your point of view. I ask you to respect mine, and the history of the place you have bought a home."
—Jessica Burnham in response to opposition to a proposed path in Edgartown

Today: Head to the P.A. Club tonight for live music with Rosie and Friends, and be sure to grab a bite at Mo’s. That’s a win-win in my book. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

All are welcome to Tisbury’s Candidate Forum at the senior center. It’s an in-person candidate forum in both contested and uncontested races. You can also watch it on MVTV until election day. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Bring the little ones to Family Yoga at the West Tisbury library, ages 0 to 5. Wonder if this would’ve chilled out my oldest who had a strong aversion to napping. I can’t repeat what my mantra was back then. 11 am. –C.B.
