The MV Times wishes you a Happy National Bird Day! Today is also the final day for communities to take part in the 124th annual Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. The Vineyard had its count on December 31, for which Islanders found 126 species and over 30,000 individuals. Schools file for demoFollowing a ruling in Massachusetts Land Court, school officials have filed a demolition permit at Oak Bluffs town hall to initiate a start on its
long-delayed turf field. But there is no timeline if the permit is approved, and high school committee members say they don’t have the funding to start the project. They want to get the ball rolling anyway. Read that story here.

Fossil-fuel free Aquinnah Aquinnah’s new bylaw restricting fossil fuel use in new buildings and major renovations recently got the green light. This makes Aquinnah one of seven municipalities in the state taking part in this pilot program, and the first town on the Island to do so. Read more here.

No agreement yetThe All Island School Committee has not come to an agreement with Superintendent of Schools Richie Smith over a contract extension. Smith was appointed to a
two-year contract in 2022, which is slated to end in June. Negotiations have been ongoing to push that contract beyond two years. Read more here.

This weekend: On Saturday, enjoy the great outdoors on a Trustees Guided Hike to the Brickyard in Chilmark, 9 am. Little ones can stay in their pajamas and wear them to a Stuffed Animal Storytime at Oak Bluffs library, 10:15 am. Later in the morning, spin into a Ballroom & Swing Dance Lesson with Tom Carberry, West Tisbury library, 11:30 am. For a spectacular show on a grand scale, get a front row seat to Met Opera Live: Nabucco at the M.V. Film Center, 12:55 pm. To become immersed in a musical fantasy, watch "Wonka" at Edgartown Cinema and dream of chocolate, 3:45 pm and 6:30 pm.
On Sunday, you can begin with a virtual Heart-centered Peace Yoga practice through Devata Life, 8 am. Continue the inner nurturing with a message about Planting Seeds for the New Year, Unitarian Universalist Society in Vineyard Haven, 10 am. To help make those seeds grow, attend a Handmade Journal Craft Class for adults at the Vineyard Haven library, 1 pm. Kids can shake out their sillies with the M.V. Family Center through Barn Buddies at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury, 3 pm. Wind down the weekend with an Offering of Music and Light Concert at Chilmark Community Church, 5 pm. Enjoy!
