Relief and gratitude

Islanders organize, state officials criticize
Several local agencies have come together to help the two dozen unhoused individuals cleared from the State Forest early last week. The Times also heard from state officials about their thoughts on the actions of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, which manages the forest and ordered the clearing, as more information has been gathered by local agencies on who was impacted. Read more here.
Paris to Major Tom
The Vineyard has its very own Olympian, Major Tom, an 11-year old horse owned by the Clarke family. Major Tom and Rodrigo Pessoa, the equestrian who rode the horse, recently participated at the 2024 Paris Olympics and ranked 17th out of 74 teams. Click here to read more about Pessoa and Major Tom’s preparation for the competition.

If you'd like to make a dessert using local fruit, sign up for Beach Plum Jam with Chef Melissa McCullough, which will be held at the Trustees' Farm Institute on Tuesday, August 27. Be sure to register early since their cooking classes can fill up fast.

Classical concert at the Edgartown Library
Island pianist Silas Berlin will be playing an afternoon piano concert at the Edgartown library on Saturday, August 10, from 3 to 4 pm. Berlin began playing when he was just six years old, and when he was 13, he developed a passion for jazz. He graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2021 and he continues to live in Seattle today. Although he may be across the country, he continues to feel supported and encouraged by the Island community. Read more about Berlin and Saturday's concert here.
