Two hundred forty-nine years ago today, over 2,000 British soldiers deployed from Boston and captured the Charlestown Peninsula in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Awaiting their arrival were 1,200 troops from the United States Continental Army, low on ammunition — hence the famous quote, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" Despite a British victory, both sides suffered significant losses. Over 200 British soldiers died and 800 were wounded, with over 100 dead and 300 wounded on the U.S. side. Edgartowner and military chaplain Reverend Joseph Thaxter was one of the wounded; in 1825 he returned to lead a prayer for the Bunker Hill Monument's cornerstone ceremony. Six died from overdosesA new state study found that six Vineyard residents succumbed to opiate-related overdoses in 2023, the same amount that died in 2022 — what at the time was near a record high for the Island. Island officials say that a likely reason for the number of fatalities is due to the presence of fentanyl that they say has been found in other street drugs. Read that story here.

New details on alleged stabbing spree The next court appearance for Jared Ravizza, the suspect accused to have gone on a stabbing spree on Memorial Day weekend and is being investigated for an alleged homicide in Connecticut, has been postponed to July 1. Ravizza has been undergoing a psychiatric evaluation to determine whether he is mentally fit enough to stand trial, and he was originally scheduled to appear
at Plymouth District Court today. Reports from the Braintree Police Department acquired by the Times also add details to what happened on May 25 at an AMC movie theater in the town, where Ravizza is accused of having stabbed four girls, and his connection to the Connecticut homicide victim found earlier on the same day. Ag Hall hosts Brazilian festivalYesterday was the Island’s first (hopefully annual) Brazil Fest at the Agricultural Hall. Hosted by the Building Bridges
Coalition, a group of entities and individuals started by MV Mediation, the event mirrored a rural Brazilian festival to celebrate the end of the harvest season. Attendees danced the quadrilha, ate coxinhas, and played games like pin the tail on the donkey and a three-legged race. The event meant to foster connection between traditional Islanders and the Island’s Brazilian community. The coalition also invited services and resources to the festival to educate attendees on what the Island has to offer. Read more here.

Quote of the Day “There’s an increasing Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking population. Folks should come together and get to know one another’s culture, food, and music [...] It’s just good old-fashioned fun.” —Communication and outreach coordinator for MV Mediation, Kiki Homer, reflecting on the First Brazil Fest on M.V.Hot Topic Comment“There are miles and (likely) years to go before the project becomes reality, but this first glimpse of it is thrilling, both in its sweep and in its attention to detail. Two of the most significant developments to take place in Vineyard Haven over the last fifty years — its emergence as an Island center of art & culture, and as a mecca for lovers of wooden boats — come together, in this project, in magnificent harmony. Onward!” —A. Bowdoin Van Riper on the proposal for the future of the Vineyard Haven waterfrontHot Topic Letter“The goal is to preserve and celebrate the maritime traditions and the studios of artists and sailmakers and other artisans who have long been part of this unique waterfront.” —Charles Sennott on HarborWorks and sailing into the future

You can go all out with this inspirational dish: Brazilian-style Feijoada, shared by Joelson Chirliani of Tropical Restaurant many years ago. It's a hearty stew that's great served with white
rice, sautéed greens, and orange slices.

The Taste kicked off the summer seasonThe Taste of the Vineyard is an annual fundraiser for the Vineyard Preservation Trust that celebrates the best food and drink the Island has to offer. The 39th annual Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll took place Thursday, with 82 vendors from on- and off-Island, including restaurants, caterers, bakeries, and breweries, setting up stalls and donating their time and food to feed the 1,000 hungry attendees. In addition to a celebration of food, the Taste is a celebration of fashion, with participants wearing colorful suits and dresses that allowed plenty of room to eat and dance. The event ended at 10 pm, releasing people onto
Main Street in Edgartown to either venture towards the bars or towards their beds. Read more about the Taste here.
