Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
With the college football playoffs coming soon and the Patriots continuing to disappoint us this year, why don't we learn a fast fact about the gridiron of our northern neighbors? On this day in 1909, the Grey Cup was first
awarded to the Toronto Varsity Blues in amateur Canadian football. Today, the playoff trophy is for the pro Canadian Football League and went to the Montreal Alouettes last month. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

The Massachusetts State Police announced yesterday that a detective assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office died suddenly. The reasons are still unclear, but State Police say that 41-year-old Sergeant Gregory Furtado “spent his career in service to and in protection of, the citizens of our Commonwealth.” Sgt. Furtado led a narcotics task force within the local district attorney’s office. Find that story here.

Quote of the Day “Know that our office will work tirelessly to help the people of the Vineyard throughout the remainder of our term. I am so deeply grateful to Vineyarders for their kindness, friendship, and support over these past seven years.” — State Rep. Dylan Feranandes announcing a run for the state senate
Hot Topic Comment “I can say from experience that the pre-school payment voucher I received as a single mother, who worked full time, contributed to the success for my daughter and myself. The voucher covered extended hours, as my job at the time did
not end at 2:40. Consider adding parents who have experienced this assistance as part of your task force.” — Beka ElDeiry comments on our story about exploring universal preschool for the Island
Hot Topic Letter “While it is overwhelmingly apparent that the Christian right and adolescent left control grossly disproportionate political power, American citizens seeking a more balanced perspective will vote as necessary to free ourselves from self-destructive extremism, while confronting the pervasive incompetencies, recklessness, religious influences, and corruption infecting government.” — Dusty Burke from Oak Bluffs responds to one of our recent essays on the newest speaker of the house

Pelikan writes that the coot is one of those birds that seems cobbled together out of spare parts. They are rare other times of the year, so now’s your chance. Read more here.
