Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s too bad we can’t put our John Hancock on a card for dear old John Hancock today. The great jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt was born in Belgium on this day in 1910. And Mariska Hargitay turns 60 today. Who doesn’t love Olivia Benson? We’ll use any excuse to slice into a birthday cake. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Chilmark preschool stamped and approved
Chilmark held a special town meeting last night for one article: voters approved the land lease for a planned preschool building behind the Chilmark School. Construction is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the 2025 school year. The project comes with enrollment at the Chilmark School, where the preschool currently operates, growing significantly in the last 15 years. Read our coverage here.
Burgers and fishing?
The Edgartown select board approved a license for a new burger joint at its meeting last night. Wicked Burger is planned to open this spring near Larry’s Tackle Shop, and the owners say it's a perfect spot for grabbing your lunch or dinner before heading out for some fishing. Read that story here.

Affordable housing concerns
The Island Housing Trust was before the West Tisbury planning board this week, trying to get approval for a development of apartment houses meant for residents who are 60 years and older. There were a few concerns from residents in the area, like the impact the project could have on private wells. Read that story here.

Hot Topic Comment
"One problem with relying on body cams is that an officer can always turn it off when they feel like it. There are known cases of this. There are other instances where a police department claimed the footage was supposedly lost or accidentally erased. How convenient for them. So while it’s a good idea on paper, it has flaws in practice."
— Jim Ventry comments on our coverage of the Edgartown Police Department proposing the use of body cameras
