Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Today is World Teachers’ Day, which celebrates educators around the globe. If you had a teacher that was a positive influence in your life, today is the day to let them know. That sounds like a nice thing to do, and just in time since today is also National Do Something Nice Day! If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Planning board v MVRHS
A joint status report and request for conference, filed by the MVRHS and the Oak Bluffs planning board, showed the parties are still negotiating next steps for the track and field project. A land court judge ruled in the school’s favor last month. The planning board is now asking for another chance to evaluate the MVRHS campus with the judge’s limitations in mind. Read more here.
Chickenpox
The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School is reporting one case of chickenpox at the school, and school officials are asking parents to get their kids vaccinated if they haven’t already or if they don’t have immunity to the virus. Meantime, state statistics recently released that the Charter School, as well as several Island schools, have some of the highest exemption rates for vaccines in Massachusetts. Read that story here.

‘Illegal for sanity’
Records obtained from the Tisbury Police Department show there were about 25 complaints filed on Beach Road Weekend over the course of the three-day August music festival. We hear from some of the residents who shared their complaints; A survey out to Tisbury businesses show broad support for the festival; and town officials with the town say that the field is in good shape. Also, festival organizers shared with us possible changes to future events. Read our coverage here.
MEETINGS
No meetings on Friday. Enjoy your weekend!

Home Business Opportunity, Oak Bluffs Sponsored

Priced to sell, vibrant restaurant opportunity and strong investment. This property is perfect for anyone looking to run a business with an opportunity to build a home onsite. An uncommon asset on Martha's Vineyard. A new owner can construct a home for themselves or perhaps two apartments for a mix of personal use and employee housing or rental units. A successful business is included in the price as well as the restaurant equipment. There is an opportunity to enhance the outdoor seating atmosphere and continue with the 74-seat capacity inside. The building is in great condition as much of it was renovated in 2017 which includes new restaurant equipment (stoves, refrigerators, freezers, all necessary kitchen items) as well as a new propane HVAC system. This is a gem of an opportunity in a really great location. Very easy to step right in to a fully functioning and well-equipped business and design your own home for the property. This area is rapidly changing and becoming a highly desirable area in Oak Bluffs.
Quote of the Day
"Where we are struggling, and what we have been working really hard to address, is our participation rate specifically in four categories: low-income, Hispanic/Latino, English learners and former English learners, and high needs. In these four categories, the school did not meet the 95 percent participation rate in terms of MCAS testing."
— MVRHS principal Sara Dingledy on a state designation that the high school is need of intervention

Hot Topic Comment
"How about PFAS monitoring of both the water and solid waste. That water has to go somewhere. The solids have to go somewhere as well. Let’s get this out in the open. Board of health. Where are you? Please make sure you are looking into this. You can’t let this stuff contaminate out water source. Expand away but please protect us."
— Shelley Wilbur comments on our coverage on Oak Bluffs prepping for the rollout of a 20-year plan to reduce nitrogen in local waterways

Hot Topic Letter
"It wouldn’t surprise me if many of the people objecting to the noises coming from the pickleball courts are some of the same people who hire landscape companies who use ridiculous gas-powered lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, and especially blowers. Those machines are not only far louder than pickleball, but they are hugely polluting as well."
— Steve Auerbach writes to us about Chilmark planners considering a ban or moratorium on new pickleball courts

Today: Edgartown library hosts Movie Night and this time it’s a Brazilian film with English subtitles, "Loveling." It’s a comedy drama about a family that lives on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Sounds good. Take the fam. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

The Red House hosts a faith-based recovery meeting open to adults who are looking for spiritual and emotional support while overcoming addictions, compulsive behaviors, or codependency. 7:15 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Another Edgartown library recommendation: Sign Language for Kids. Babies develop motor skills before verbal skills, so they could possibly communicate using sign language before they can talk. How cool is that? Ages 1 to 5. 10 am. –C.B.

Engaging the Island
If you were at any kind of election or candidate forum on the Island, chances are you met members of the League of Women Voters of Martha’s Vineyard. The group remains engaged with the community and actively encourages folks to vote. Recently, the league held a membership tea honoring longtime member Leigh Smith at Martha's Vineyard Museum. Learn more about the league’s history on the Vineyard and what they continue to do here.
