Waylon’s passing hits Vineyarders
From an impromptu memorial to reflecting on his character, Islanders are mourning the death of Vineyard teen Waylon Sauer. Described as an excellent student, a peer leader, and an athlete, those who knew him told The Times the impact this loss has on the community. Read more here.
‘Massive process failure’
The Dukes County Commissioners weighed in on the recent revelations regarding the Sankaty, and Commissioners had their concerns. One member suggested the Steamship had attempted to cover up the issue. Overall, they want management to be held accountable and the officials to address systemic issues. Read our coverage here.

Interest in public courts
On Monday, the Chilmark planning board held the first of its public hearings on a proposed prohibition of pickleball court construction. Commenters and officials were receptive to the idea of a public pickleball court, which could address residential noise concerns while still offering a space to play. The public was also relatively split for and against a ban, citing exercise benefits as well as noise concerns. Read more here.

Edgartown Waterfront Estate Sponsored

Spectacular 35 acre Boldwater Association waterfront estate on Edgartown Great Pond with breathtaking views over 1,000 ft wide low brushy pond front terrain and across the 3/4 mile wide Lyles Bay, dreamy Swan Neck Point, the 1 1/2 mile wide main pond and barrier beach to the ocean beyond. The handful of well pruned trees on the property enhance the water views. The sophisticated and charming quality house was built by Andrew Flake, arguably the finest Vineyard builder over the last 40 years. Mark Hutker created an innovative design with an arc shape nautical theme so every room faces the water. The 3 second floor bedrooms enjoy large terraces and the first floor primary bedroom opens to a nice deck and quiet garden sanctuary. The handmade luxury kitchen cabinetry and extensive woodworking were done by Smallbone, a British Company noted for time honored design and craftsmanship. Adding to this estate, reflecting decades of careful planning and development, is a lovely private pool and pool house, 4 room guest suite over the garage with large deck, two stone wall enclosed specimen fruit tree meadows, a large field circled by a grand stone wall, a idyllic lily pond and two miles of private trails. Last but not least, are 14+ abutting sub-dividable acres into potentially 3-4 lots. Keep boats and small craft on your mooring at waters edge for a short trip to the 3,000 ft Boldwater private beach. Boldwater is 30 homesites on 450 acres with 150 acres of conservation and abuts approximately 1,500 acres of conservation lands and a few large estates. A most remarkable rural area convenient to town and the airport.
Quote of the Day
"We know exactly where he’s at, [and] we do believe we are very close. Our investigators feel confident that we have identified the individual responsible for this homicide."
— Sgt. Dustin Maria with the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office on a suspect they have in the death of Pat Gregory

Hot Topic Comment
"This is also lagging behind the construction boom. 2020 was the year to do it. With interest rates high and some tightening up of the economy it creates a disincentive on new construction. The more tax the less of the taxed activity."
— Frank Bouchard on a rise of permit fees in Aquinnah

Hot Topic Letter
"You cannot stand there and watch in silence. There is a moral obligation to speak out. But if you want to reframe it in self-interested, pragmatic terms, then consider: If they can do it to them, they can do it to you."
David Mintz writes to us calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

Staying in?
We remember that time Connie Berry made these little Pesto Pizzas and didn’t bring any into the office. They’re really simple, and a quick little something to bring to a potluck or game night. Maybe she’ll think of us next time.

This Was Then
David Curney was a deep-sea diver and underwater engineer who settled in Vineyard Haven. He’s the subject of Chris Baer’s column This Was Then. An immigrant from Nova Scotia, he contributed to the construction of the Cape Cod Canal, as well as on Nathanael Herreshoff’s marine railway in Bristol. The story goes into what it was like as a marine salvager 100 years ago. Read more here.
