Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.

Hard to believe it, but today is opening day for the Boston Red Sox! Unfortunately, the game is on the West Coast, so it won’t start until 10 pm. But, we will now have the steady rhythm of baseball in the background, and while there may not be much hope for BoSox this
season, nothing screams summer more than baseball. Go, M.V. Sharks! If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A career considerationSome fire chiefs on the Island say that they are struggling more and more to retain volunteer firefighters, also known as call firefighters. Vineyard fire departments have historically relied completely on volunteers, but with numbers lacking, at least one department is considering hiring more than a dozen full-time firefighters to man their engines. Read that story here.

Coming soon to Five Corners? An installation to partially reduce flooding at Five Corners may begin as soon as this fall. The University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center, which has been working for several years to improve the intersection, detailed plans at yesterday's Tisbury Select Board meeting. The plans involve combining three outfall pipes into one, preventing backflow through the pipes, and adding an emergency outlet to further reduce flooding. Read more here.

A resilient shack Crews were on South Beach today taking down a lifeguard shack, a building that’s been there for a long time.
The shack was able to survive the "Great Hurricane of 1938," unlike many of the surrounding properties. But this winter proved too much. And with ocean waters lapping at its walls during some tides, officials believed it was time. Read the story here.

Newly built, custom home located in Katama, just a short walk to
Edgartown and a quick bike ride to South Beach. A new owner will appreciate the thought and attention to detail that has been incorporated into this home, which was designed and built by an experienced building company, Speedwagon Partners. Featuring a combination of contemporary design and expertly crafted details, like bespoke cabinetry, porcelain and quartz surfaces, and white oak flooring, the home instantly feels very luxurious and elegant. There are a total of four bedrooms and four full baths, plus two half-baths and two laundry rooms. The living spaces are open to each other, yet also defined, with an abundance of natural light, thanks to oversized windows and high ceilings. The living room fireplace, Wolf and Thermadore kitchen appliances, and a 10-foot quartz island are just some of the features that make this property stand out. A finished lower-level completes the home, and the property is well-landscaped, focusing on a gunite pool and a hot tub with
tasteful stonework, plus a gas fire pit and decking.

Quote of the Day "I wanted to explore the different ways that women view their relationships, view love itself, and how they find themselves after falling out of love. It’s about going on a path of finding who you truly are, and discovering that you don’t need someone else to tell you to ‘love yourself,’" — Bernica Wilcox on her painting exhibition, "The Gaze of a Woman"Hot Topic Comment"This is good news for the island and hopefully we can stop the commercialization of these rental properties in residential districts. We all have neighbors who have no intention of living or retiring here and run their rental property as a cash cow to the detriment of the neighborhood. They put in swimming pools, hot tubs, and create mini resorts next-door to families who are just trying to live and work here." — Bob Murphy on a Nantucket court case concerning the short-term rental marketHot Topic Letter"Why not choose the exceptionally qualified, thoughtfully bright Island candidate with guaranteed housing and personal, historical knowledge of the place and its culture? Wow. What an extraordinary loss for the Chilmark community and its next generations." — Hillary Noyes-Keene on the selection of an off-Island principal for the Chilmark School

Today: The Edgartown library screens "Hidden Figures," a terrific film that I can actually say I’ve seen. Octavia Spencer is wonderful in this one. She’s always wonderful, but extra awesome playing mathematician Katherine Johnson. 6 pm. –Connie Berry
For those who observe, it’s Maundy Thursday, which is a hoot when you try to explain why you’re not saying Monday Thursday to young children. Services at 7 pm at the Federated Church and St. Andrew’s, and at 7:30 pm at the First Congregational Church in West Tisbury. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Looking for a little something to do Friday afternoon? Check out the Group Exhibit by Local Artists at Pathways at the Chilmark Tavern. While you’re up there, could you let me know when the general store opens? 12 to 9 pm. –C.B.
