Pereira's Journey
|
|
Lyndon Johnson Pereira came to Martha’s Vineyard in 1985, traveling to the United States from his hometown of Goiabeira, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Though Pereira’s time on-Island was brief, he holds the title of the first known Brazilian immigrant to work on Martha’s Vineyard. And he is the first of many. After Pereira recommended two friends for work in 1988, word spread quickly, and now, an estimated 20 percent of the Island is Brazilian. The Times sat down with Pereira to hear his story of immigration, his Vineyard memories, and his role in shaping a community.
As we head into Labor Day, The Times is publishing this article as the first in a series on Brazilian immigration and how it is changing the workforce on Martha's Vineyard. The three-month reporting project that went into this series brought home stories about Brazil and allowed us to take the pulse of the vibrant heart of an increasingly diverse Island. Watch a video interview with Pereira and read more here.

Heath Widdis – From The Cliffs a craft |
The Gay Head Cliffs are essential to Widdiss’ spirit. Even in his youth, he recalls, “Almost every day, no matter what, I had to ride my bike out to them. It was like touching base. And to be able to make the pots now is just amazing. It’s been a dream come true.” Read more.

Quote of the Day
|
“The outpouring of love and support has kept us going during this unthinkable time. There have been more letters sent than we have been able to read through, meals dropped off to keep us healthy and fed, and unending phone calls and visits.”
—Julia Rappaport on the community’s response to her father’s passing
