Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On June 25, 1978, the first version of the rainbow flag, symbolic of the LGBTQ rights movement, was flown at San Francisco’s Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day parade. "It completely astounded me that people just got it, in an instant like a bolt of lightning—that this was their flag. It belonged to all of us," Gilbert Baker, drag queen, clothing designer, and creator of the rainbow flag, said. The original flag included pink and turquoise but had to be modified in order to be mass-produced quickly. The slightly-altered design from Baker’s original flag is now the international symbol for pride. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Transfer fee lifted
The Massachusetts senate presented its version of a massive bill that will include a significant investment into housing. But what is missing is a real-estate transfer fee, a provision that Islanders have been calling for to boost their efforts. But local officials and lawmakers tell us the Island wasn’t forgotten. Part of the bill includes a seasonal designation that provides special benefits to the Cape and Islands. Read that story here.
SSA mulls over PETA controversy
Posters made by PETA hanging aboard the ferry Martha’s Vineyard are making the Steamship Authority reconsider its advertisement policy. The ads caused controversy among Islanders as it targeted the lobster industry to raise awareness on the plight of critically endangered North Atlantic right whales. The ferry line’s board will be reviewing potential amendments in a future meeting. Read more here.
Pounds of fish donated to pantries
An Island fishing vessel headed for Menemsha Thursday carried about 800 pounds of fluke, but when plans to sell to an Island wholesaler changed, Martha’s Vineyard Fisherman’s Preservation Trust took the catch and prepared it for donation to Island pantries. Read more and see photos from an impromptu filleting session here.

—Brenda Leonard responding to an accident involving a branch falling onto a car in Oak Bluffs
