Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Did you know that in Ireland and Scotland they carved turnips rather than pumpkins? The American tradition of carving pumpkins was recorded as far back as 1837, but it was originally associated with harvest time, not specifically for Halloween until decades later. We’ve got pumpkin seeds baking in the Times’ kitchen right now. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Tracking lead pipes
The Tisbury Board of Health is proposing new lead pipe regulations that would require the replacement of service pipes made with lead to be replaced at the time of a property transfer. Part of the effort is to see just how many lead pipes there are in town, and it could be a regulation that other towns could model after, with the federal government potentially passing its own regulations. Read more of our coverage here.

Wildfire mitigation
Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank commissioners voted to reject a regional request to build a fire lane through one of its properties that straddles Oak Bluffs and Tisbury. Instead, the commission wants Land Bank staff to come up with their own plan. The concern is that working on a grant with other entities could require more clearing that they want on their property, particularly trees in the Wapatequa woodlands. Read our coverage here.

Housing boost
The Healey Administration recently announced a round of economic grants for hundreds of projects across the state. Included are two local projects that are receiving close to $1 million in total. That includes the Southern Tier project in Oak Bluffs and Meshacket Commons in Edgartown. Funding for both projects will be used to connect to town utilities, including sewer and water. Quote of the Day
"Of course I was in awe of him — he was a living legend in the American theater world … He was a distinguished and imposing figure with a brilliant and passionate love for live theater."
— Artistic and executive director of the Playhouse MJ Bruder Munafo
on the passing of Robert S. Brustein

Hot Topic Comment
"A few years back the town spent thousands of dollars to create a walkway from Beetlebung to Creek Hill opposite the Ruel gallery. Many people still walk in the middle of the road at that curve and often three or four abreast. The town also installed a wooden boardwalk on the east side of the parking area from the restrooms all the way to the beach. People still walk in the middle of the road all along that stretch."
— Jim Ventry comments on talks to improve pedestrian access in Menemsha

Hot Topic Letter
"I wanted to thank you for your segment on ‘Voices of Veterans.’ Hearing of the experiences of our Island friends and neighbors was heartwarming. There is so much history and valor in their stories."

Today: Tisbury has William Street and West Tisbury has the Ag Hall. If you’re up-Island, take the kids to the great Halloween Party with a spooky hayride, games, and snacks at the Ag Hall. 6 to 8 pm. –Connie Berry

My old friend Father Tony hated Halloween. If he were around, you’d find him up at the Chilmark Church for Pizza Night with a slice of pepperoni rather than trick or treating. Free. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: They’ve got a Canasta Club at the West Tisbury library. I used to know how to play. My parents were all about it. I liked the cool brown plastic holder the cards went in. Very fancy. Check it out. 3 to 5 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
For a fun Halloween snack, try the kid-friendly recipe for Roasted Pumpkin Seeds. You can toss in all kinds of seasonings. The first step, though, is to embrace the mush. Kids could also try guessing the number of seeds in a pumpkin. Hint: the more wrinkles on the outside, the more growth on the inside...

Spooky eats
Our in-house chef has come up with some fun halloween treats. They involve dipping Oreos in chocolate and adding googly eyes. As Nicole Jackson writes, "the treat was more sweet than scary, they were definitely a hit, and it gave me yet another good excuse to be able to play with my food."
