Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1732, George Washington was born. He became the first president of the United States after the Revolutionary War. In a different historic milestone on this day, a team of scientists announced in 1997 the birth of Dolly the sheep, the first clone of an adult mammal. Cell disruption
A number of Islanders experienced their cell phone service being cut off on Thursday, but they’re not the only ones. AT&T and some other cell service providers had a nationwide outage. Luckily, it seems there wasn’t a large impact on the Vineyard. Read more here.
Early ferry suspension
The Steamship Authority is planning to undergo repairs for its pier at the Vineyard Haven Terminal. However, this also means that the 5:30 am ferry off the Island will not be available while the work is being done. Read more here.

Chilmark keeps its lights on
Chilmark is considering how much energy resiliency, or backup power, it wants to have for its town hall, fire, and EMS buildings. The town could build a full microgrid with over a week of backup power, or simply outfit the buildings with solar energy and provide up to four hours. A study on the costs associated with different options will be finished midyear. Check that out here.

Waterfront House and Guesthouse, Chilmark Sponsored

Martha's Vineyard has many fine waterfront properties, but only a handful of exceptional ones. The Lee Family Compound is an exceptional, 3-acre waterfront property with breathtaking, unobstructed pond views from an elevated secure location, 750+ ft. of pond frontage, 48-ft. dock with separate mooring for easy access to Menemsha Pond and Vineyard Sound, and privacy without an abutter in view — all compliment the spacious, 5-bedroom, 5-bath, comfortable, well-built main house and the well-sited, 2-bedroom, 1-bath, contemporary guest house. The stunning views are everywhere, so 14 of the 16 rooms in both houses enjoy grand pond views. Because of the elevation, the sunsets, moonrises, and stargazing are some of the most remarkable the Island has to offer. The two-home compound can house 18 comfortably and is perfect for year-round family events. Come launch your canoe, kayak, or paddle board from spring to fall; swim, clam, or sail from private sandy beach off the point all summer long; sunbathe on your private dock or 3 decks or on the terraced lawn overhanging the cove; and enjoy seasonal holidays by a roaring fire with extended family and loved ones. This compound is proof that a picture is worth a 1,000 words (see Video Aerial Tour).
Quote of the Day
"It’s like every message a teacher, parent, community member, or human on this earth wants to embody. I think that’s what the performing arts stand for. We come together to be reminded that we are empathetic, kind beings who just want a sense of belonging and joy."
— MVRHS musical director Brooke Hardman Ditchfield reflecting on last weekend’s performances of "Twelfth Night" and its messages of exploration and acceptance

Hot Topic Comment
"Anyone who thinks that leaving the scene of a serious accident is not advocating for taking responsibility and being honest. It’s irresponsible to say the least to suggest it. It encourages lawlessness. But then again, one of the major political parties in this country seems to be gleefully dancing down that path in their new golden MAGA sneakers."
— Don Keller, in response to a hit-and-run incident in Oak Bluffs last week

Hot Topic Letter
"While we are interested in and care deeply about what is happening in the world, we are first and foremost a local news organization, focusing on events and news that impact the lives of our Island readership."
— The MV Times, encouraging emphasis on localization of Letters to the Editor submissions

Staying in?
Why not have your cake and eat a cookie, too? Then try the recipe for Whoopie Pies, by Chef Erica deForest. This one adds red food coloring and mint cream cheese, but you can modify it to your heart's desire. Can you guess the filling for a classic New England version of this dessert?

Art, agriculture, and the Island
Despite no longer needing to utilize sheep and their wool for survival as the first Islanders once did in the 1600s, the fiber arts remain a prominent historical and creative aspect of the Vineyard's culture. Knitting and felting remain activities held close to the hearts of many local artists, resulting in wooly creations like knitwear, handcrafts, and more. Read more about it here.
