New Art arriving daily. Open 7 days a week. A warm welcome awaits you.
Baby, it’s hot outside
With the bulk of the country in the midst of a heat wave, the Island is feeling the effects of hot, humid weather too. But it’s not as bad as nearby Boston where the real feel today was above 100 degrees. We checked in with libraries and councils on aging to see if people were using them to get cool and the answer was yes, but not in huge numbers. Meanwhile, Eversource reported some power surges on the Island were related to increased demand. Our team of reporters and editors bring you this story.
Of food trucks and beaches
If we’re talking food trucks, you know we’re talking West Tisbury. The long-awaited food truck regulations have been approved, but not before they created some last-minute indigestion for select board member Skipper Manter. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update. Meanwhile, the Dukes County commissioners received praise from the former owner of Eastville Beach for their quick response to his complaints about the state of the beach. Reporter Abigail Rosen has that update.

Answer man
You’ve seen the tourist information booth in Oak Bluffs, but do you have any idea what goes on inside? Our news intern Natalie Aymond spent some time there with Leo Gagnon who spends time inside the booth handing out flyers and other materials to Vineyard visitors. Gagnon is often asked for directions and about the ferry schedules (even though the SSA has its own ticket office nearby). You can read all about it here.
MEETINGS
There are no meetings scheduled for Friday. Let’s all meet at the beach to cool off.

Spring Point Waterfront Paradise Sponsored

Stunning Chilmark north shore 4 acre waterfront paradise with wonderful sunsets and unique privacy nestled between a large wooded hill and a 200 acre private estate. The 6 bedroom 4 1/2 bath two kitchen main house and 2 bedroom (with 2 dormers) 2 bath guest house enjoy dramatic views of the Elizabeth Islands from the Gay Head Lighthouse to Woods Hole from 15 of the 18 rooms. The property is beautifully manicured with an enchanting contour stretching to the bluff overlooking a dreamy private cove and sandy beach. Four cleared acres are very rare on the heavily wooded north shore.
Quote of the Day
"He has threatened me. He has threatened me repeatedly. He’s threatened to destroy the library and my personal directorship. He’s threatened me with a lawsuit. This once great man is reduced to bullying a librarian to sell a book."–Ebba Hierta, Chilmark library director, on Alan Dershowitz claiming he’s been canceled by the Vineyard

Hot Topic Comment
Carolyn O’Daly was one of many people chiming in on the Alan Dershowitz story. "Why give the whining man-baby a voice? He deliberately defends the worst scumbags just to get his face on TV. Cut him off I say."

Hot Topic Letter
Alan Dershowitz responded to an online commenter with a Letter to the Editor. "In my half century on the Vineyard, I have never once broken into a line. That is not what I do, as I’m sure the vendors and customers at the farmers market who know me will attest. I stand patiently in line, usually with my son, and talk to the others online."
Today: The 25th Anniversary Water Tasting by the Sea happens tonight. A fundraiser for Vineyard House, this year it takes place at Waban Park. You can get tickets for this great cause at the door. My pal Rose Guerin and Jeremy Berlin provide the music. 5 pm. –Connie Berry

Circuit Arts drive-in at the YMCA screens "Poppy," about a girl who doesn’t let Down syndrome define her. My kind of superhero. You can get there around 7 pm or later. –C.B.
Tomorrow: If you have a tween or teen at home, especially one who loves to draw, check out this Cartooning Workshop at the Vineyard Haven library. Three weeks in a row starting this week, and you can come to one of them or all of them. Free. 11 am. –C.B.

Staying in?
MV Salads has been serving fresh and tasty salads on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs for four years now, and they’ve got a new location in Edgartown with a bit of a twist. MV Botiga, located on Church Street, is offering delicious salad wraps made with some local produce and other ingredients. The botiga (meaning "shop" in Catalan) has a variety of salad wraps and other Island-made goods to check out. Just make sure to get to MV Botiga early — the wraps get eaten up quickly. Read Lucas Thors’ story on the relatively new business and what it’s offering the community.

Welcome note
As Peter Boak leaves his position of director of the Island Community Chorus after founding the group in 1996, a new leader with an impressive background and a passion for choral singing and performance is stepping in to continue the legacy. Bill Peek is the new director of the chorus, and he says he’s excited to bring some new pieces to the repertoire, as well as add his own touch to pieces the group already knows and performs. Read Lucas Thors’ story on the Island Community Chorus as they enter this exciting new phase.
