Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It’s Monday after a big weekend on-Island. As documented in this Minute, we have pictures from the fireworks, the Ag Fair, and our own Islanders Write that wraps up tonight. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

‘A sweet soul’
We hear from a family member and former colleagues of Julie Harris, the 41-year-old Florida woman who died in a tragic moped accident on Thursday last week while vacationing on the Vineyard. Read that story here.

Islanders Write
A panel discussion kicked off this year’s Islanders Write series Sunday evening, moderated by MV Times publisher Charles Sennott and featuring four prominent speakers who delivered perspectives on how to navigate delivering truth in the current age of misinformation. Read more here.

The fair brings the joy
Along with the traditional games and fun the Ag Fair brings each year, this year’s lineup offered new vendors with some cultural flair, as well as a record number of oxen for the oxen pull. Read more here.
Beach Road and Five Corners got some rain today. As this newsletter goes out the rain has just stopped coming down, and water is lapping at our newsroom door.

Quote of the Day
"We will always remember her ever-present smile and good humor, as well her empathy and support for those in need."
—Ron Lazarus, COO of DeNova Detect, reflects on Julie Harris' positive impact on others

Hot Topic Comment
"I was a motorcyclist for more than 20 years and recall that when starting out on a learner’s permit, motorcyclists aren’t allowed to carry passengers in Massachusetts. A passenger just adds too much instability to the operation of a two-wheeled motor vehicle. If we can’t ban mopeds on Martha’s Vineyard, perhaps we can ban mopeds with two people aboard."
Nis Kildegaard poses a possible policy change around mopeds

Hot Topic Letter
"We don’t have a housing crisis on the Vineyard: We have a tourism crisis. Publicly funded affordable housing is not the solution to, but an accommodation of, the problem. What we should be doing is stop giving seasonal business licenses to people who will not commit to doing business all year round. The towns should all be able to agree that if you want to do business on the Vineyard, you should be willing, like a good citizen, to stick around and help clean up."
—Michael Hall proposes that short-term businesses are behind housing scarcity.

Quite a lot at Notalot
Sometimes all you need is to grab sandwich fixings without the fuss of the big stores. But, you want local-ish foods in a low-key, almost curated shop. Luckily, if you're in Oak Bluffs, the Notalot Farm Shop grants your wish, in MV Smokehouse patés and more. See for yourself, here.
