Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Please enjoy this copy of The Minute, with an updated link for the PFAS story. By Feb. 8, 1978, New England was finally digging out of a three-day Nor’easter that dumped more than 50 inches of snow in some areas of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Think about that when you look up at that baby blue sky today. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

PFAS found at the Oak Bluffs School fields
A recent report by environmental consulting firm Weston & Sampson Engineering, Inc., shows that samples taken from the soil at the Oak Bluffs School indicate the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The anthropogenic chemicals were also found at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, but soil samples from the elementary school show ‘consistently higher PFAS concentrations’ than MVRHS. Abigail Rosen has this update.
Windemere outbreak reaches nearly every resident
Twenty-six out of the 30 Windemere residents tested positive for the new COVID variant XBB.1.5, also known as "Kraken," in the outbreak that occurred in late January. Fortunately, most of the residents and staff members who tested positive for the variant have recovered. Martha’s Vineyard Hospital maintains measures to prevent further spread of COVID, but the variant is likely circulating on the Island. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update.

Aquinnah looking to wind industry for lighthouse repair aid
Aquinnah is negotiating with offshore wind projects, namely Southfork Wind and Revolution Wind, to help fund repairs to the historic Gay Head Lighthouse. Although details have not been solidified, this could bring a steady revenue stream for the lighthouse upkeep. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story.

Quote of the Day
"We and West Tisbury are the only two towns that I knew of that, last year, adopted a requirement that every new building have an electric vehicle charger. The state has now picked it up and put it in the stretch code." –Aquinnah climate and energy committee chair Bill Lake on new state building codes

Hot Topic Letter
Amy Custer wrote a letter to the editor on behalf of the Tisbury School Sunshine Committee thanking the community for their support: "A couple of weeks ago I ran around downtown asking business owners, managers, and the salespeople if they would consider a donation to the Tisbury School Sunshine Committee. On Friday night at our staff winter party, we were able to award eight generous door prizes … The Tisbury School staff is so grateful for their prizes, and the Sunshine Committee is humbled by all the goodwill in our community."
Today: Leave it to the Oak Bluffs library to come up with the No Book Book Club. Read a short story or essay then discuss it with the group. This month they’re focused on Black women who shaped the U.S. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

I love this idea: Online Age 50+ Job Seekers Networking Group. If you’re looking for a new career path or re-entering the job market, check out this forum via the Edgartown library. Our libraries are always thinking about us. 6 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow:
I’m on a library roll right now. Chef Look Cooks, also thanks to the Edgartown library, and this time it’s butternut squash lasagna. That sounds pretty fantastic, although I love any kind of lasagna (except maybe liver lasagna). 5 pm. –C.B.

A well-earned retirement
Patricia Bergeron has worked at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for nearly five decades as the unit coordinator for the emergency department — now she is enjoying her deserved retirement and looking back on all her memories and hard work. Of course the job was stressful and very demanding, but Bergeron is all about community, and the fact that she was helping her friends, neighbors, and fellow Islanders made it all worthwhile. Catch Bergeron about town and out on the water shellfishing with her husband, and read Abby Remer’s story on Bergeron’s long career.
