Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
We will not be publishing a Minute on Monday as our staff observes the Christmas holiday. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Today is Festivus for the rest of us. Air your grievances in our comment section. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. View it in full here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our short film to see how we created a beautiful new kitchen out of "leftovers" from a generous donor. You can help us build the affordable housing our island needs by clicking here to donate.
Pouring it on
Ferries were canceled, streets were flooded, but for the most part the power stayed on. That’s the early returns from a massive winter storm that blew onto the Island late Thursday and into Friday. While some off-Island schools canceled classes on Friday, Martha’s Vineyard students were in class. Our reporting staff was out getting lots of photos and videos to keep you informed about the storm. Here are the details.
Phone a friend
When it came time to certify the Up-Island school budget, the school committee had a problem. With one member (Skipper Manter) opposed, they had only three votes to certify when they needed four. So they reached out by phone to school committee member Jim Newman who was absent and he agreed to vote to certify the spending plan. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this update.
Getting to the Point
Now that it’s official that the Trustees of Reservations will not be renewing their lease to manage Norton Point, the Edgartown Parks Commission began discussing in earnest how to go about making the switch to having the barrier beach under town control. The parks department will negotiate a management lease with the Dukes County Commission, but a sticking point is how to fund what’s needed for the beach ahead of town meeting. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.
MEETINGS

The Oak Bluffs select board meets at 4:30 pm Tuesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Not so quiet
You know you need something to watch other than another Hallmark Christmas movie. (Trust us, you already know how it ends: Woman goes to her childhood home for Christmas, meets man who wasn’t nice to her, somehow he romances her, and they live happily ever after in the family’s country farmhouse.) Well, reporter Eunki Seonwoo gives us the antidote to those unrealistic made-for-Hallmark stories with the latest iteration of "All Quiet on the Western Front." Not a holiday movie, for sure, but a dose of reality. See his review here.
