Fenway bound
Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket high school football teams are taking their rivalry to the mecca of New England sports, as Fenway Park will host the annual Island Cup on November 26 at 5 pm. The high school, which leads Nantucket 22 games to 21, is looking forward to defending its title on the big stage. Read more here.
Investigation underway
The explanation for an injury of a Steamship employee earlier this summer was originally blamed on a tide. Documents obtained by The Times show it was a little more complicated. The Steamship also says they are investigating. Read that story here.

On the car-paign trail
Artist Gretchen Baer, who grew up on the Island and currently lives in Arizona, continues her work in political support through art with her "Kamala Car." Her popular creation, the "HillCar" made an appearance on the Island during the summer of 2022, and Baer said this new project in support of Harris will make its way to the Island soon. Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?

Newly built, custom home located in Katama, just a short walk to Edgartown and a quick bike ride to South Beach. A new owner will appreciate the thought and attention to detail that has been incorporated into this home, which was designed and built by an experienced building company, Speedwagon Partners. Featuring a combination of contemporary design and expertly crafted details, like bespoke cabinetry, porcelain and quartz surfaces, and white oak flooring, the home instantly feels very luxurious and elegant. There are a total of four bedrooms and four full baths, plus two half-baths and two laundry rooms. The living spaces are open to each other, yet also defined, with an abundance of natural light, thanks to oversized windows and high ceilings. The living room fireplace, Wolf and Thermador kitchen appliances, and a 10-foot quartz island are just some of the features that make this property stand out. A finished lower-level completes the home, and the property is well-landscaped, focusing on a gunite pool and a hot tub with tasteful stonework, plus a gas fire pit and decking.
Quote of the Day
"Maybe some people are good at phone banking, or knocking on doors. But I’m an artist, so I use my art as a form of support."
—Gretchen Baer on her reasoning behind making her "Kamala Car"

Hot Topic Comment
"The Vineyard and Falmouth board members are looking out for their constituents as best they can. They both have been vocal in their serious concerns about SSA management, but together they are only 45% of the vote. At Tuesday’s meeting, the Representatives for Nantucket, Hyannis, and New Bedford were essentially silent, with the small exception of the chair (Hyannis) doing his best to run the meeting. For the hour and a half I spent watching, none of the three contributed meaningfully to the discussion."
—Doug Ruskin on the recent Steamship discussions

Hot Topic Letter
"Zoning and zoning enforcement are the bedrock of ‘ordered liberty’ in every American town. The zoning bylaw provides clear notice to everyone about the structures and activities that are allowed or prohibited in each zone. The Cormies are performing a public service for every property owner in Tisbury. They deserve our support."
—Kenneth Wainwright writes to us about issues surrounding "workforce housing" in Tisbury

Today: Meet NYT bestselling author Martha Hall Kelly, who will talk about her latest book, "The Golden Doves," at the Edgartown library. She wrote "Lilac Girls" and has another book in the pipeline, "The Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club." 7 pm. –Connie Berry

A new Vineyard butterfly?
Already this August, the Island has produced 16 reports of red-banded hairstreak, or Calycopis cecrops. For a species unrecorded on the Vineyard until 2016 and absent from all of Massachusetts until just a few years prior to that, it’s a remarkable count. Our Wild Side columnist explains.
