Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1940, two brothers would open up a drive-in restaurant in California that would eventually turn into the giant fast food chain McDonald’s. The Island isn’t quite so keen on having chain businesses setting up shop, but we bet you know a couple of local joints to hop on over to for a juicy burger. South Beach restored, but different
A slew of devastating winter storms left South Beach in shambles. The large sand dunes were leveled, part of Atlantic Drive collapsed, and the Donnelly Camp structure was unsalvageable. After months of dredging, planting, and restructuring, restoration is done for the summer season, but what beachgoers knew as South Beach now looks very different. Read more here.
Google conundrum
You may have already noticed, but MV Times isn’t listed as being on Beach Road anymore on Google Maps. That goes for some other businesses in Tisbury as well. The tech giant’s mishap has turned Beach Road in Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs into Anchor Way. Just in time for the summer to begin rolling in. Read more here.

Golden determination
Nearly a decade ago, Noelle Lambert lost her leg in a terrible moped accident. However, that didn’t stop her and she has prevailed against adversity. Now, Lambert is training with a goal to medal during the Paris Paralympics, which will start in August. Read more here.

Quote of the Day
“He wasn’t just a person who thought about starting a business organization. It was more like he was building a family and keeping people together and helping the whole community to stay together and to support each other [...] We (the Island community) weren’t ready to let him go. […] It’ll be nice to see that plaque on the wall.”
— Renee Balter, on friend and colleague
Dennis daRosa and his memorial ceremony later this month

Hot Topic Comment
“PETA’s agendas are all radical and often hypocritical. It is awful to start a campaign to destroy the livelihoods of hundreds of fishermen while supporting shark conservation, specifically great whites, which kill far more whale calves than modern fishing gear, and shameful for the Steamship to display this propaganda.”
— Scott Terry, responding to a
PETA ad placed by the Steamship Authority

Hot Topic Letter
“Every animal is someone. All living beings should be treasured, not trapped. Be kind, go vegan, and save the planet.”
— Scott Miller of the PETA Foundation,
responding to backlash at a PETA ad at the Steamship Authority

Today: Live theater is back for the season with “To Fall in Love” at the M.V. Playhouse. Sounds like a memorable drama, just the way I like them. A couple comes together for one night after a tragedy to see if they can pull themselves back together. 7 pm. –Connie Berry

The lovely Polly Simpkins invites all MVY Radio listeners to join her on Zoom (mvyradio.org/bookclub) for the Rock and Roll Book Club, and this time around it’s "Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop," written by Danyel Smith. 7 pm. –C.B.

Tomorrow: Ceramist and painter Washington Ledesma opens his Oak Bluffs Studio/Gallery so we can visit. Love his work. One look puts me in a better mood. 4 to 6 pm. –C.B.

Preserving the power of flowers
Flowers are more than a pretty plant — they are an integral part of the human experience, when it comes to expressing emotions like love, sympathy, and gratitude. However, florists and environmentalists warn us that if we want to keep our precious flowers, we must do what we can to protect them. Read about what you can do here.
