A chief for O.B.
Oak Bluffs fire chief Nelson Wirtz announced that he will retire in December. He’s credited with uniting a department that was experiencing some turmoil. Read more about his career here. With his impending retirement, the town is also considering regionalizing the chief position. Read that here.
Save the Mariposa Museum
The Mariposa Museum in Oak Bluffs has showcased African-American and African diaspora artists since opening in 2019. But it hasn’t been easy financially. And after a "Save the Mariposa" event was canceled, the museum’s board plans to take stock after this season and decide whether to reopen next year. Read more here.

Let the fun begin
Tonight will kick off a string of traditional August festivities on the Island, with Illumination Night lighting the campground in colorful lanterns for this evening. Tomorrow marks the opening of the Ag Fair, bringing people from all corners of the Island together for classic fair fun. Read more here.

Today: Illumination: Enjoy a patriotic community sing at the Tabernacle at 7:30 pm before walking around Oak Bluffs at 8:30 pm to see how 300-plus houses decorate and celebrate Illumination Night. Live music by the Vineyard Haven Band will follow.

The Hollow Parties: Lifelong Chilmark seasonal resident Daniel Schlozman will speak about his latest book at the Chilmark library. The book offers a major history from the country’s founding to our present. 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
Tomorrow: Alpaca Walk: learn the basics of handling alpaca safely, where they come from, and why they are important at Island Alpaca. Pre-registration is strongly suggested, weather permitting. Two events: 10:30 am and 2:30 pm. Age and price information.
