For the youth MVYouth announced this year’s round of scholarships that are going to Vineyard students. This year, there are a dozen Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors and a graduate, including one of our own – intern Nikeya Tankard. These scholarships pay for any
remaining outstanding finances for a four-year college program. Read that story here.
New director up-Island The Up-Island Council on Aging has a new director. Bethany Hammond will be starting within the next few weeks. She takes over from Joyce Albertine,
who has been director for nearly four decades. Hammond says she’s excited to take the reins, and has been working at the council in a number of capacities for the last ten years. Read that story here.

Abigail Higgins, in her Garden Notes column, says that forsythias are back in full force later than usual this year, and nettles, found on every continent, are one of the longtime fixtures of herbal medicine. She adds that recent intense downpours mean that the pesticides on lawns run off into estuaries, harbors, and bays, resulting in algal blooms, poisoned waters, and shellfish. Read more here.
