Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1945, World War II in Europe ended. How appropriate on a Wednesday for our deadline, with our news editor expecting a baby soon. Pick up an MV Times on the rack tomorrow. It’s a good edition. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
NOTE: This newsletter might be cut short by your email program. View it in full here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: MV Film Society

At home you are surrounded by life’s distractions, inclined to pick up the phone or do the dishes. Escape reality for a few hours with a screening at The Film Center.
Enjoy cinema snacks and relax in one of our reclining chairs in front of the big screen.
Simply sit and immerse yourself. You’ve earned it.

Freighting down to the Vineyard
Steamship Authority staff members recommended the New Bedford company 41 North Offshore run an on-demand freight service to the Vineyard. However, there are some concerns remaining about the service’s implementation, like switching from using Vineyard Haven Harbor to Oak Bluffs during the summer. Read more here.
Gimme shelter
After a record-breaking number of guests this past winter, Harbor Homes wants to add five new beds to its seasonal homeless shelter in Oak Bluffs. However, additional beds will need approval from the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School committee, which leases the shelter's land. Before signing off on the request, committee members want to consult with Oak Bluffs officials who have voiced concerns about the program in the past. Read more here.

A grand master
Nevin Sayre of Vineyard Haven is being inducted into the Windsurfing Hall of Fame tomorrow. The legendary surfer was ranked worldwide as the number 2 windsurfer in the 1980s. He’s part of an inaugural class going into the hall. Oh, he was also named grandmaster for a competition this week, blowing out the others in his age group. Read that story here.
BONUS PHOTO
A Tesla Cybertruck Odyssey was recently spotted on Martha's Vineyard. Share your thoughts with us on this latest model, which looks like something straight out of a James Bond film. Thank you to Alice June Thompson for sharing this image of a futuristic vehicle!

MEETINGS

The Martha’s Vineyard Airport commission meets at 2 pm on Thursday. Here is the agenda.

The MV Times: Our reporting makes a difference
Journalism that matters, where you need it, when you need it. Want more?
Quote of the Day
"We expected it to be just the strangest thing ever, and that Olivia would be a certified nut. But actually she was very nice. Aside from traveling with her dad’s skeleton, she couldn’t have been more normal."
— Mike Creato of Classic Aviators on Olivia Gray Konrath flying with her dad’s skeleton

Hot Topic Comment
"We should have done this years ago. Our kids could graduate from HS bilingual, a big leg up for the college bound and a total asset for those who will run or work in our island businesses. The existing K-8 language programs are always hard to staff, intermittent and insufficient. Portuguese is a language the kids can practice every single day. Brilliant idea, let’s get it done island wide."
— Geraldine Brooks on Tisbury School exploring a Brazilian-Portuguese class

Hot Topic Letter
"Readers of newspapers in small communities have expectations. They expect to recognize themselves in the reporting that keeps track of their lives. They expect the news writers to live among them, to be broadly familiar with town goings-on, and with the difficulties and successes common among their families and town leaders. They want news coverage that understands and keeps a watchful eye on the ways they live their lives."
— In an essay from our former publisher and editor, Doug Cabral

Today: You know what I liked about the good old days? Stuff like quilting, canning pickles, and men lighting your cigarettes. We can go back there through the Quilting Circle that meets at the West Tisbury library. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

The Film Center screens "John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger." What an interesting artist. All those beautiful portraits. Learn all about it at 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: Calling all Tisburians or Vineyard Havenites: There’s an Open Meeting about the Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District. It’s a creative movement, folks, and they’re talking about music this time around. Don’t be left behind. Katharine Cornell Theater. 6 pm.

Movies! Check out what's playing at Island theaters here.

Staying in?
Add a dash of sunshine and a bit of zing to your dishes this season by using Preserved Lemons, a recipe by Chef Stephen Grace that was shared by Joanne Lambert. The citrusy result can be used with sauces, beverages, seafood, roasted vegetables, and more. Just use a little imagination and express your zest.

If your culinary adventures lead to a recipe to share with the community, send it to us at recipes@mvtimes.com, and include a photo of the dish and a brief backstory if you have one.
