Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1945, the bikini was introduced. But did you know the name was inspired by a "news-making U.S. atomic test" that took place in a place called Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean? That’s according to History.com. That’s why today is National Bikini Day. It’s also National Apple Turnover Day. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Back and Fourth
The Edgartown parade and fireworks were back for the Fourth of July and that seemed to please a lot of people. On Monday, thousands of people lined the streets of downtown to watch the parade. A short time later, there was a lot of ooh-ing and aah-ing as fireworks cascaded above the harbor. Reporter Abigail Rosen, news intern Natalie Aymond, and reporter Rich Saltzberg provided team coverage of the parade, including a video clip, and photographer Jeremy Driesen shot the fireworks. Meanwhile, Abigail caught up with a few people who weren’t in the mood to celebrate for obvious reasons. Here’s that story.
You can’t do that
A property owner in Aquinnah is getting a lesson in state regulations and town bylaws when it comes to building near a wetland.  Jeff Elghanayan, whose off-Island address is Laguna Beach, California, was ordered to cease and desist construction at 5 Mariners View Lane. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the details.

Full court press
Walking by the Church Street tennis courts recently, our minds flashed back to that May 2020 meeting when so many neighbors got on a Zoom meeting to implore the Tisbury select board to keep the courts and fix them. Two years later, the courts are in bad shape, but we’re told a significant upgrade is coming soon. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this update.
MEETINGS
The West Tisbury select board meets at 4:30 pm Wednesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

The Dukes County Commission meets at 4:30 pm Wednesday. Remote access. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"It’s been wonderful so far. It will only get better and better. When I saw this I was like, man, the Homeport, so many memories. I’m loving bringing her back."–Seth Woods on purchasing and reopening the Homeport restaurant in Menemsha

Hot Topic Comment
Don Keller commented on our story about some people not being in the celebrating mood this Fourth of July. "The recent SCOTUS decisions have happened because of the apathy and indifference of the people. Yes. here on the Vineyard, we have our comforting beliefs that if we occasionally protest at 5 corners things will work out.The liberals are naïve. The conservatives have tapped into a deep seated hatred and bigotry that seems poised to bring down America as we know it."

Hot Topic Letter
Frank Brunelle wrote that the new bike lanes on Beach Road are working and he’d like to see more of them to encourage cycling on the Island. "Traveling on State Road I can observe, and anyone else can, that there is plenty of extra room for vehicles, but cyclists are riding in a very dangerous and uncomfortable narrow strip. Why? Don’t we want more cyclists and fewer motor vehicles? It is just a question. Why are all our roads not altered to allow four to five feet for cyclists, depending on circumstances, pretty much everywhere? It’s just a question. So simple, so effective. It is just paint."
Today: M.V. Playhouse presents Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," directed by MJ Bruder Munafo with a cast of local performers. Outdoors at the Tisbury amphitheater. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

If I could stay awake past 9, I’d go to the P.A. Club tonight for the
Old Skool Dance Cafe. The last time I danced I could barely get out of bed the next morning. Funky four corners gets rough at my age. 9 to 11 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: North Water Gallery presents an Art Premiere with Elise Phillips, Julie Friedman, and Carol Maguire. Might I suggest a stroll around Edgartown? Linger awhile in the art gallery on a Wednesday afternoon. I’ll just live vicariously through you. 10 am to 5 pm. –C.B.

Staying in?
You know what we love most about salad? You can basically throw in whatever you like, mix it with fresh greens, then put a little olive oil and lemon juice on it and you’re done. Try this recipe for Pea Shoot, Pea, Watercress, and Arugula Salad.

Gardens among friends
Members of the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, MV Grower, and Island Elderly Housing (IEH) tenants collaborated for an afternoon of planting and camaraderie at the community garden on the Woodside Village campus of IEH. The Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation is also lending a hand to the Woodside garden through its grant, which expanded opportunities for gardeners with disabilities. Read Anne Ryall Sylvester’s story here to discover more about the planting, the organizations and people involved, and why one tenant of IEH called the afternoon "the best party ever."
