Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
It may be Monday after a holiday weekend, but here’s some inspiration for you: The Nobel Prizes were established on this day in 1895 through the will of Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a Swedish chemist and engineer. It’s also Jimi Hendrix’s birthday. And the first Macy’s Day Parade was 99 years ago. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Today's Minute is sponsored by: Island Housing Trust

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our Island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
Clear-cut
Two parties involved in a lawsuit surrounding the alleged clear cutting of more than 100 trees near Menemsha Harbor have reached a settlement of $2.5 million. The plaintiff in the case says that her neighbors took down the trees for a better view of the harbor and to increase their property value. Read more of our story here.
Support for moratorium
After holding off on making a decision, the Edgartown Board of Health decided to show its support of the Oak Bluffs Board of Health’s potential turf moratorium. Oak Bluffs health officials are expected to meet tomorrow to possibly vote on the issue. Get the details here.

Sparing no sauce
Chef Deon Thomas — known as Chef Deon — has been giving back for over a decade by supplying hundreds of families a home-cooked meal on Thanksgiving. That was 50 turkeys last year. And it takes loads of volunteers to make it come together, including Deon’s family and the sheriff of the county. Read that story here.

Quote of the Day
"What do I get from this? The joy of the community. There is no cost…this is my giving back to the community. It’s all volunteers; the only people getting paid are the chefs in the kitchen."
— Chef Deon Thomas on why he supplies hundreds of free meals on Thanksgiving

Hot Topic Comment
"Deon’s has long been among our favorite Island eateries. Good food piled high, reasonable prices, welcoming atmosphere. After reading this story, Deon’s stands alone at the top of our list. Many thanks to the small staff and the many volunteers."
— Tom Pallas comments on Chef Deon cooking meals for others this past holiday

Hot Topic Letter
"I am sure most of the protesters only had good intentions in mind. Images coming out of Gaza are horrific, and any human being should be pained at the sight of innocent human suffering, and disgusted by Hamas’ use of human shields. But I’m afraid to say that the event organizer’s intentions seem less noble than the protesters who innocently joined him."
— Rabbi Tzvi Alperowitz with Chabad on the Vineyard writes to us about a recent demonstration at Five Corners calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

Today: Ever consider being in a Drawing Group? Now is your chance to try it out for zilch — the best way. The West Tisbury library hosts and provides materials if you don’t have your own to bring. (I have to thank Elizabeth Whelan for that fine photo.) 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry

With two stars like Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman, it’s no wonder "Notorious" is such a great film noir. Part of the M.V. Playhouse’s Monday Movies series. $5 cash at the door. 6 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: There was a time when I wouldn’t have considered this Balance Class with Kanta Lipsky. Yeah, those days are over. Now I’ll focus on anything that keeps me upright. M.V. Playhouse. 9 am. –C.B.

Meals on Wheels
On the Vineyard last year, the nonprofit Meals on Wheels delivered 42,079 meals across the Island with 60 volunteer drivers and 40 backup drivers. That’s out of the more than 250 million meals delivered across the country. Writer Mollie Doyle highlights some of the work that’s ongoing, and why it’s a challenge for the organization to raise funds. Read that story here.
