Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
A whaling ship with the name Essex was rammed by a sperm whale on this day in 1820. The boat would sink, and became the inspiration for Herman Melville’s "Moby-Dick," a favorite for many a seaman and Islander. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Watch our film about repurposing a bed and breakfast and creating rental housing for hospital staff. Our hospital has 150 unfilled jobs. The lack of affordable housing is one of the big reasons. You can help solve our island's year-round housing crisis by clicking here and donating now.
Midday Sunday, newly formed group Ceasefire MV organized a protest at Five Corners, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Organizers are considering holding the protest weekly. Partway through the protest, a man with a swastika sign arrived — protesters quickly approached the man and destroyed his sign, before police took him aside. Police are investigating the incident. Ceasefire MV organizer David Mintz is concerned that photos circulating of the swastika at the protest could cause some people to falsely view his efforts as antisemitic. Read more here.
A 37-year-old Brazilian national, convicted of raping a 5-year-old child in his home country, was arrested on Martha’s Vineyard last week by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to ICE, the man, who has been residing in West Tisbury, is wanted by Brazilian authorities for allegedly fleeing the county after being convicted of the crime. Here’s that story.
Vineyard Committee on Hunger held its yearly effort to provide Thanksgiving meals for needy families. Food was raised for 150 families. Also at the event, the committee was presented with a $5,000 check by photographer Michael Blanchard, who sells photography calendars every year to benefit a worthy cause. Both the committee and Blanchard were given helping hands by Daybreak Clubhouse, a Martha's Vineyard Community Services program that provides opportunities for mentally challenged adults. Quote of the Day
"We find this most recent incident to be so egregious, and perhaps indicative of true negligence, that we felt it necessary to spend an hour of our Nov. 15 County Commissioners meeting voicing our concerns to James Malkin, and the Vineyard’s Port Council members, John Cahill and Joseph E. Sollitto Jr."
—A letter from Dukes County Commissioners to the Steamship on the untethering of the Sankaty and the months following

Hot Topic Comment
"Who thinks MV ponds are healthy? Can someone tell us how many wells have been contaminated with various substances? We live on a pile of sand. What goes in the toilet will eventually go in the water. Can I make it any more graphic than that??"
— J. Ayer comments on out story that the local realtors association is pushing back against Tisbury’s nitrogen regulations

Hot Topic Letter
A word of thanks from Bob Tankard, veterans outreach coordinator at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, on a recent comedy night: "The night was filled with laughter, raised awareness for the housing needs of our Island veterans, and all the proceeds of the night were donated to this wonderful, much-needed project."
Today: David "Two Arrows" Vanderhoop of Sassafras Earth Education gives us a talk on the truths about the Thanksgiving holiday from an indigenous Wôpanâak perspective. This is a great way to prepare for the upcoming holiday in an important way. Follow directions for the Zoom link. 6 pm. –Connie Berry

Professor emeritus Philip Weinstein continues his six-part series on Tolstoy’s "War and Peace" on Zoom, via the Vineyard Haven library. It’s provided by Lifelong Learning Swarthmore. 7:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: The World Market Holiday Shop is up and running at the Capawock Theater in Vineyard Haven. They have crafts from around the world for sale, and you’ll find that one-of-a-kind gifts fill the place. I go at least once every year. I find it hard to remember I’m shopping for other people, not myself. 10 am to 6 pm.

Fall gardening notes
Our Garden Notes columnist has some tips for planting in the fall, and how to bring out those autumn reds and oranges. Pro tip: Dill, arugula, and cilantro prefer cool weather. They self-sow, and are emerging in vegetable gardens. Also, if you haven’t planted garlic yet, you should soon. And if you are a forager, you may be able to find some dandelions. Get more gardening ideas here.
