Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The Allies landed in Normandy in 1944, launching the largest amphibious military operation in
history. The invasion also spelled the beginning of the end of World War II. World leaders gathered at the site of Normandy today. There was much discussion on the war in Ukraine and the unimaginable specter of a conflagration in Europe was in the air, stirring a determination to protect the peace that was so hard fought for. Labor union calls for fair contract Teamsters Local 59, a labor union representing 400 Steamship Authority employees from parking attendants to licensed deck officers, has called for a fair contract from the ferry line. In particular, the union is looking for better working hours for licensed deck officers, otherwise known as captains and pilots. Currently, SSA pilots and captains need to work 18 hours within a 24-hour period. The current contract is set to expire by July 26. Read more here.

Peak tick season expected until mid-June Long pants, socks, and repellent spray are a few necessary practices to stay ahead of tick-borne illnesses, and the greatest culprits on the Island are deer and Lone star ticks. When it comes to tick
bite prevention, Felix Neck’s Fern and Feather Nature Camp has counselors and campers tick-check themselves and each other. While the risk of tick bites can’t be entirely eliminated, there is a growing effort to reduce deer numbers through groups such as the Venison Donation Program. Read more here.

Sunny and bright describes this sweet home settled off of State Road in Chilmark. Well located near Menemsha Pond, the Chilmark Store, and the Chilmark Community Center, this is a great home for summer or year-round living. The original house was built in 1856
and it has been added onto, creating a south-facing kitchen and living space with wrap-around windows and tons of natural light. Off the living room is a northwest-facing, all-season, glassed-in porch, which captures the last rays of the sun. This house has been well loved and well maintained. On-site is a heated workshop/studio barn with a large, finished, private space above. Attached is a double-car garage. The property is well landscaped with mature gardens and old stone walls lining the boundaries. Five-bedroom septic permit in hand for easy expansion of the main house or a detached bedroom in the studio.

Quote of the Day "There are a lot of hoops to stay in the business. That’s something you have to go through in aquaculture." —Isaiah Scheffer, Chilmark shellfish constable, on new oyster farming methodsHot Topic Comment"What this individual did at the West Tisbury Congregational Church was not a ‘protest’ or ‘free expression’ – it was a violation of private property and vandalism and as a criminal act should be punished for the good of society as a whole." —Rev. Matthew Splittgerber on Pride flag ripped down on the first day of Pride monthHot Topic Letter"It’s time to settle this dispute before more cases are
tossed out. The Island deserves a fair administration of justice, not squabbling from two of its most powerful officials." —From this week’s editorial on the dispute between the offices of the local district attorney and the Dukes County sheriff

Enjoy a salad and a sandwich all rolled up into one with the recipe for Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce, by Chefs Maura Martin and Austin Racine. The sky's the limit when it comes
to the fillings, especially at this time of the year when leafy greens and fresh herbs are plentiful.
