Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.

On this day in 1868, the 14th amendment to the Constitution was adopted. Imagine there were 13 other amendments before all persons born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves, were granted citizenship? It’s National Milk Chocolate Day and National
Chili Dog Day. Looks like we’ll have to wait another day to go on that diet. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Tisbury’s taxing dilemmaThe Town of Tisbury should think about buying up Mega Millions tickets as the lottery game’s jackpot reaches the $1 billion mark. On Wednesday, town leaders got some sobering but expected news. Worldwide supply issues and inflation are driving the price of the Tisbury School project sky high. Leaders will go back to the voters next month in the hopes of having them approve a nearly $26 million increase. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has the update.

No day at the beach The Trustees of Reservations got a public airing of its draft beach management plan and it wasn’t nearly as pretty as the beaches they manage. The Edgartown conservation commission added to the criticism of the document, particularly the limits it puts on the public access to the beaches, as well as dogs. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this update.

In the spotlightIf you’ve ever seen the video, you likely remember it. A white school resource officer taking a Black student violently to the ground. There
was outrage, but the incident didn’t get the attention of other high profile cases involving race. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has the story of "On These Grounds," a documentary produced by Ariana Garfinkel, who has ties to the Island. The documentary is showing nearby at the Woods Hole Film Festival. Eunki also has the story about an event coming up next month on the Vineyard that’s intended to promote wealth in Black and Latino communities. Black Ambition is promoted by
awardwinning rapper and entrepreneur Pharrell Williams, and Mosaic Genius. You can check that out here.

Quote of the Day "It’s been going up. Now it’s all very clear terms. It is a substantial increase."–Town administrator Jay Grande on the Tisbury School project’s being nearly $26 million over budgetHot Topic CommentThe decision in Oak Bluffs about yoga on the beach continues to confound. Here’s what Donna Blackburn had to say: "Wwhhhaaaattt?????….. With all that is going on in the world…the war, illnesses, random shootings, the emphasis on inclusion for all peoples….you would think that something as
peaceful as a yoga group would be a welcome sight on the beach. The parks and recreation personnel ought to be ashamed of themselves!….Where is their common sense… oh, yah, I forgot…common sense isn’t common, and certainly not in OB!"Hot Topic LetterJohn Hough Jr. wrote about the Dershowitz dust up in Chilmark. "I think it’s safe to say that the ability to take ‘heat’ in the form of physical threats isn’t part of the job description of head librarian at Chilmark, or any other Vineyard library. Mr. Dershowitz has been summering here for years, and ought to know this."
