Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 2004, 52 million people tuned in for the final episode of the T.V. show Friends. Also on this day 70 years ago, if not more impressive, Roger Bannister became the first person to run a mile in under 4 minutes. At that pace, he could have run around all of the Vineyard in about 8 hours. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Kids' fishing derby celebrates 50 years
Saturday was a special day for families who attended the 50th Annual Kids Trout Tournament at Duarte’s Pond. The young participants, many of whom are second- or even third-generation competitors, ate hotdogs for breakfast and reeled in fish to win lures, hats, trophies, and even bikes. Cooper Gilkes, mastermind behind the tournament, celebrated five decades with a TV set up by the weigh-in station showing home videos from past years. Read more here.

The Tisbury School committee is exploring the idea of a Brazilian-Portuguese language program, with a Spanish teacher stepping aside. The idea is — with such a large Brazilian population at the school and on the Island, and some having difficulty with English, it might benefit students to learn the language. Read our coverage here.
Islander wins "Jaws" million
A painter from Tisbury has won a "Jaws" scratch ticket through the Massachusetts lottery, landing him $1 million. The new instant ticket is part of the celebrations of the classic’s 50th anniversary — it turns 50 next year. That an Islander has won is perfect synchronicity. We are still trying to reach the winner, Gecimar Silva, who is a painter on the Island. If you know, first say congrats, then pass along our info. Read some of his story here.
