Today’s Flag Day! In 1777, the Continental Congress approved the "Stars and Stripes" for the national flag, though the design then only had 13 stars to represent
the country’s 13 original states. It wasn’t until 1916 that President Woodrow Wilson established June 14 as national Flag Day. Then, in 1949, congressional legislation required that this date’s designation be signed into law by President Harry Truman. Legislation also requires the president to make a Flag Day proclamation every year. "As our Nation evolved, so too did our flag — with every new star added to Old Glory, we were reminded that the work of forging a more perfect Union never ends," said President Joe Biden in his official proclamation this year. DA–Sheriff dispute reaches state's highest courtRobert Galibois, the Cape and Islands
District Attorney, filed suit against Dukes County Sheriff Bob Ogden this week. Galibois is asking the state's highest court, the Supreme Judicial Court, to order Ogden to provide officer disciplinary records. The DA is similarly suing the Barnstable Sheriff for their records, referred to as Brady materials. Ogden objected to the DA's request, saying that asking for 20 years of the records is unreasonable. Off-Island marijuana greenlit for the VineyardThe state’s Cannabis Control Commission approved the transportation of cannabis products over state waters on Thursday, opening up the path for the local dispensary Island Time to reopen its doors after undergoing inspections. This will also bring to an end a lawsuit jointly filed by Island Time owner
Geoff Rose and the Green Lady Dispensary on Nantucket. The decision preserves access to legal marijuana for both patients and recreational consumers. However, how much this decision will help Fine Fettle, the medical marijuana dispensary in West Tisbury, remains to be seen. Read more here.

New babesiosis treatment undergoing clinical trialCurrently, 60 Degrees Pharma, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is testing a new treatment for babesiosis, called tafenoquine. The anti-malaria drug is still undergoing tests in a "randomized, placebo-controlled" clinical trial. As current treatment still runs the risk of babesiosis patients relapsing, this new treatment is a potential new solution. The second most common tick-borne illness according to Patrick Roden-Reynolds, head of the M.V. Tick Program, is babesiosis. This "rapidly
emerging" disease can cause flu-like symptoms in some people, and no symptoms at all in others. Read more here.

Márcia De Castro Borges Márcia De Castro Borges, a Vineyard resident who lived in Brazil until 2019, is a visual anthropologist, educator, and writer. She investigates the relationships between image, history, memory, and identity. Borges showed one of her projects recently at the Chilmark library, illustrating the step-by-step process of making cassava flour. "I think it’s very interesting, because it shows that almost 300 years ago, they could develop a technique that continues today," said Borges. Read more
