The Times wishes you a happy National Fishing Day! If you're a long-time Vineyarder, you might have your share of favorite fishing spots. If you're new to fishing or to the Island, the M.V. Chamber of Commerce has a friendly guide. "There is a fish (or mollusk) for every skill level," the guide reads. Recommendations include visiting Vineyard tackle shops for experienced advice, and arranging
a shore fishing guide or boat charter trip with staff. You could also just bring your fishing rod to a beach, though do take care to check access regulations beforehand. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

SSA captains call for better hoursChanges are needed in the Steamship Authority's working schedule to attract new talent, ferry captains say. These statements come as the SSA continues negotiations with Teamsters Local 59, the labor union representing ferry captains and pilots. They say the working hours, which are longer than the industry standard, can be unsafe due to fatigue. The Steamship Authority is also struggling with crew shortages, which has led them to run a reduced schedule this summer. Read more here.

Statewide 911 system back onThe 911 emergency phone number was down statewide for about an hour, but county officials say that it is now operational again. Vineyard residents were temporarily advised to direct emergency calls to the business line of the regional emergency communications center. It is still unclear what led to the issue. Read more here.

School’s out for summerThe Tisbury School – and all other Vineyard elementary schools – celebrated its last day, with students and teachers eagerly anticipating summer. At the center of the celebration were students of grades kindergarten to second parading across school grounds, parents and teachers on either side blowing bubbles and cheering. A bright yellow banner reading "Happy Summer!" blew above the crowd. As years of renovations come to a close in the next couple of months, teachers have expressed excitement about the new year, and the increased stability that’s to come. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "Fentanyl is showing up everywhere. Your pot can be laced with it; it’s in coke, it’s in pretty much everything you don’t know what you’re getting into these days," —Island Health Care mental health specialist and substance use disorder access coordinator Dr. Brian Morris, reflecting on Island opiate overdose trendsHot Topic Comment"First of many I hope! It appears everyone had a wonderful time. Such an extraordinary day." —Jane Rossi on the Island’s first Brazil Fest Hot Topic Letter"This seems especially unfair, when the majority of the seamen do not live on Martha’s Vineyard and would have nowhere to go if they were to leave the mooring. Furthermore, the seamen’s unfair hours are due to a 20-year-old waiver granted by the Coast Guard
that was meant to be a temporary measure. This policy obviously requires updating." —Aislinn Weintraub writes to us in support of Steamship workers

Today: Beetlebung Farm in Chilmark invites us to tour the farm, taste their green garlic, meet the farmer, the
chef, and the miller and baker. No candlestick makers, but they’ve got everything else covered. 5:30 pm. –Connie Berry
Chef and cookbook author Catherine Walthers leads a lesson in Induction Cooking at the Vineyard Haven library. I’m not exactly sure how it works,
but it’s better for the environment than cooking with either electric or gas stoves. I googled it. 6 pm. –C.B.
