Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.

Welcome to our first Minute of October. On this day in 1922, Editor George Brennan’s father was born. In other words, he would have turned 100 today. Today is also the anniversary of O.J. Simpson being acquitted in the double murder of his estranged wife Nicole Brown
Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Not a banner day for the justice system. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Court updates There are two cases to update readers on today. An Edgartown woman who had as many as 65 cats on her property, some of them stored in a shed, pleaded guilty to an animal cruelty charge. Jennifer Winsper, 50, was put on probation for one year with the understanding that she not work with or own animals. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this
update. Meanwhile, Wayne Iacono Jr. pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual assault in a case involving a 14-year-old girl who was drunk at the time. He was sentenced to one year in jail. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this update. Rich also has an update on an Edgartown business owner who is charged with
fraud related to workers compensation. Here is that story.

Branded in Boston The affiliation between Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and Mass General has long been understood, but the parent company dropped its Partners Healthcare moniker several years ago and has slowly been integrating the Mass General
Brigham (MGB) brand into its community hospitals. While that’s caused some controversy among the heavyweights at Mass General and Brigham & Women’s, hospital CEO Denise Schepici told The Times there is none of that drama at the Island hospital where the rebranding is being taken slow. Editor George Brennan has this story.

Dance fever A group visiting from Senegal had Islanders moving and grooving at performances at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury and the Water Works building in Tisbury last week. The events were a collaboration between the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School and Pathways Arts. Reporter Eunki Seonwoo has this story, some photos, and a
video. However, he is suspiciously missing from the crowd dancing.

Quote of the Day "We tried our best. It’s discouraging that people felt afterwards that it was too complex or too restrictive and that they did not present those comments beforehand. We have been asked to go back to the drawing board [and craft] an RFP that will attract attention from potential shippers that are known to be out there." –Steve Sayers, special counsel to the Steamship Authority, on the lack of bids for an off-Cape freight service to and from Martha’s Vineyard Hot Topic Comment Janet Hefler commented on the resignation of Tisbury select board member Larry Gomez. "Thank you so much, Larry, for all of the years of service you have given the town of Tisbury. As a member of the town’s Finance and Advisory Committee, you could be counted on to provide a thoughtful evaluation of the town’s annual budget and a practical approach to expenditures. We were fortunate as a town that you brought your FinCom experience and familiarity with all of its departments and its governance to your role as a Selectman. Your practical opinions and calm demeanor also were an asset to the board." Hot Topic Letter Jean Hay wrote to say that $2,700 raised
from a book group yard sale will go to help end gun violence. "We are sending these proceeds to Brady United, a gun control organization that seeks through education, state legislatures and the federal government to end the epidemic of gun violence in our nation."

L’shanah tovah The High Holidays of the Jewish faith, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, are celebrated by the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center each year. As many folks from the community turned out at the Tabernacle for Rosh Hashanah, director of publications Connie Berry was also there to learn more about the extremely important
holidays, and what they mean both religiously and historically. Read Connie’s most recent Have Faith column here.
