Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1788, a series of essays that urged the ratification of the U.S. Constitution called the Federalist Papers was released as a published book. The essays were written by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the pseudonym "Publius."
Also, it’s town meeting night for Tisbury, so don’t forget to get to the MVRHS Performing Arts Center to exercise your civic duty.If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.
Ravizza pleads not guilty Jared Ravizza, a man with ties to the Island, pleaded not guilty in Plymouth District Court on Tuesday for allegedly slashing two people with a large kitchen knife at a McDonald’s in Plymouth on Saturday. He also is charged with assault to murder four girls, aged 9 to 17, at an AMC movie theater in Braintree several hours earlier. Connecticut State Police have said he is being investigated for a homicide in their state that same day. The court in Plymouth ordered him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation and return on June 17. Records show Ravizza also had a run-in with Vineyard police, who charged him with assaulting his father in West Tisbury in April. Read more here.
Apartment kitchen in Vineyard Haven catches fire Tisbury and Oak Bluffs fire departments extinguished a small fire Tuesday at Havenside Apartments, an affordable senior housing complex in Vineyard Haven. No one was hurt but Lucinda Kirk,
property manager, told the Times it wasn’t yet clear if residents could return to the building on Tuesday night. Read more here.
Honoring Island veterans Every Memorial Day, the Island honors veterans, living and dead, with a parade and with the Avenue of Flags in Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven. Islanders attended speeches by members of the armed services, and paid their respects to those lost in war. Vineyarders also enjoyed themselves at the Memorial Day Picnic, catered by the Town of Tisbury and local businesses. Read more here.

Quote of the Day "Black boys, especially in America, are really villainized and masculinized. I just wanted to show black kids being black kids."—Nyoka Walters on her art piece at the MVRHS Evening of the Arts
Hot Topic Comment "I applaud the work of Americorp but I think they are assuming that all people on Martha’s Vineyard are rich. When in fact we have many people who live below the poverty line, many elders who need help, autistic and disabled kids who need help, learning disabled kids and adults who need help. In other words, students at the high school don’t need to leave the island to find organizations and individuals that need their help. One can have a volunteer experience right here on Martha’s Vineyard!" —Kristin Zern on AmeriCorps’ recent on-Island recruitment pitch
Hot Topic Letter "That two-plus month impossible mission could only have been proudly accomplished by an Island native son who honorably left the Island after graduation, joined the Marines becoming an officer, went to war and returned to our Island after honorably serving our country and becoming the new town administrator of Edgartown." —Woody and Phyllis Williams commending James Hagerty on the restoration work at South Beach in Edgartown
Today:It’s the last Community Meal for the season at Chilmark Community Church, and my intel says it’s a pasta dinner instead of pizza this time around. Everyone is welcome to enjoy this gathering with fine eats and finer company. 6 pm. –Connie Berry
I love a good Paint Party. Jazen’s Art Studio hosts painting a hydrangea and lupine fence at Noman’s. I’m pretty sure this means food and drink will be available too. And all this on a Tuesday. 6:30 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow:The Family Center in Vineyard Haven invites the littles and their families to learn how to plant and maintain the garden there with help from Island Grown Initiative. For ages 0 to 8. Noon. –C.B.

Friday's contest answer: Brielle Leonard
Resilience captured by MVRHS The Vineyard Conservation Society’s (VCS) newest exhibition, "Resilience" showcases an annual student art and writing contest relating to conservation and the environment. This year's theme of resilience inspired Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School artists and writers to think of ways
in which nature is resilient. The students’ impressive reflections are on view through June 9 at the Feldman Family Artspace, curated by Featherstone Center for the Arts at the M.V. Film Center. Read more here.
