On this day in 1919, the U.S. Senate passed the 19th Amendment by a count of 55–25, giving women the right to vote. The amendment was ratified the following year. The New York Times described the celebration in its June 5 edition: "Suffragists thronged the Senate galleries in anticipation of the final vote, and when the outcome was announced … they broke into deafening applause. For two minutes the demonstration went on, Senator Cummins making no effort to check it." The article also lists who voted against suffrage, including Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts. Police seek suspect who tore down church Pride flag
West Tisbury police are trying to find a man who allegedly ripped down a Pride flag at the town's First Congregational Church on Saturday. A security camera posted at the church took a video of the incident and police then posted the photo and asked the public for help. The rainbow-striped flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ+ pride and social movements. "We've been an open and affirming church for almost 10 years now," said Reverend Cathlin Baker, who has requested police presence at the church during Pride week. Read about it here.

More pieces to the Ravizza puzzleWest Tisbury Police reports show that accused South Shore stabber Jared Ravizza, who is
in custody and undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, knew the 70-year-old homicide victim in Deep River, Conn. Last year Bruce Feldman, who was found dead on May 25, had requested West Tisbury Police do a welfare check on Ravizza, saying he believed the 26-year-old was on psychedelics. Another report revealed that Ravizza would shift his occupation when talking with Islanders, claiming he was a pro skier or DJ. It all dded to the uncertainties surrounding Ravizza prior to his arrest on charges of stabbing six people over the Memorial Day weekend. Read more here.

Dairy Queen opens under new managementEdgartown’s iconic ice cream shop reopened Monday with a bang. When doors opened at 3 pm, more than a dozen customers had formed a line into the parking lot, primarily with students coming from school. Paul Beeson and Kirsten Anderson finalized their ownership last week and Beeson said he was nervous but excited for this new chapter. He plans to add menu items this fall to the usual offering of soft ice cream treats. Read more here.

Remember the lessons you learned at the Charter School, in and outside of the classroom, and carry them wherever you go.” —History teacher Deirdre Brown addressing seniors at the Charter School GraduationHot Topic Comment“SSA should use Crowdstrike or Palo Alto or another cybersecurity firm since it operates infrastructure and an essential service for us islanders. Training is good but server protection is needed.” —Ana da Sousa responding to the unsolved SSA ransomware attacks. Hot Topic Letter“People are kind. There is hope for the future. We make the future, we make the day
brighter … not them, us, you and me.” —Abigail McGrath on the people who helped her after her car broke down
