Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
Yesterday's intro celebrated the anniversary of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," released back in 1982. Today's is for another Spielberg landmark — "Raiders of the Lost Ark" came out on this date in 1981. In about the time it takes to read this newsletter, Indy in the
opening scene will have just found a poison dart lodged in a tree. I was searching our paper’s 1995 archives today for a Do You Know? photo, and happened across coverage of Harrison Ford filming "Sabrina" that April in Vineyard Haven. Our article compared the filming to that of "Jaws," which took much longer and received some pushback from Vineyarders. Keep an eye out for film crews this summer too. If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

A new nonprofit
filed plans with local regulators today that would reshape a large section of the Vineyard Haven waterfront. Included in the plan is Boch Park, three properties owned by the DeSorcy family, and the property where we — The Martha’s Vineyard Times — sit. The idea is to build new space for artists, nonprofits, Gannon & Benjamin, and The Times as well as a public pavilion with a stage that would be the setting for public forums.
Also in the plans is a new pier with public access and some
250 feet of public beach. The developers behind the project are called Vineyard Lands for Our Community, led by Steve Bernier and Phil Wallis. And complicated permitting is just about to begin. Read our story, get a better look at the plans, and tell us what you think of the proposal here.

Quote of the Day "I’ve never seen that anywhere else. We heard that in almost every single interview." —Gianna Dipinto on the Rural Health Scholars’ findings that a significant portion of Vineyarders say that community is the Island’s greatest successHot Topic Comment"I think that the deeper issue here is that as a society we’ve become so self-oriented that we’ve largely lost the capacity for civil discourse – as seen by the trend to shift demonstrations of free speech into violence, vandalism, and the violation of others’ rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." —Reverend Matthew Splittgerber, on the vandalization of a pride
flag at a West Tisbury ChurchHot Topic Letter"A big thank-you to all the nurses at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, who always have a patient’s best interest at heart. All of those nurses felt spoiled by the wonderful businesses and local services who contributed to the Nurses Week festivities." —The Martha’s Vineyard Hospital reflecting on National Nurses week last month

Brunch fit for a queen This past weekend, Red Cat Kitchen hosted their 3rd annual Drag Brunch, concluding the pride weekend celebration that took place in OB. Drag is a performance artform that plays with expectations of gender expression, entertains an audience, builds community, and allows artists to express themselves. Sunday's show had a strong message of positivity and inclusivity with members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies in the audience. "Come as you are, we accept you here for who
you are, this is a safe space for everyone," Timothee Lee, beverage director at the Red Cat said. Read more about it here.
