Got a minute?
Here’s what’s happening on Martha’s Vineyard today.
On this day in 1901, a woman became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Not our idea of a good time. Today is also National Food Day and National Bologna Day. Is this the confirmation we needed that the processed meat is not food? If your friend sent you this, sign up for yourself here.

Legal challenge
For the first time in years, there is an open seat for the Cape and Islands District Attorney. Democrat Rob Galibois is facing off against Republican Dan Higgins to see who will replace longtime DA Michael O’Keefe. The Times asked both candidates what they would do to help police officers on the Island, how the office would deal with prosecuting nonviolent criminals; and even asked about Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C. Reporter Rich Saltzberg interviewed the two candidates. Here are their answers.
Paving paradise
Well, not quite, but they did put up a parking lot next to the Stop & Shop in Vineyard Haven after the former Golden Dragon building was leveled. The town had ordered the building either be fixed or razed after finding it posed a safety hazard. Stop & Shop decided to take it down and is now looking to move the Caleb Prouty House, which can now be seen from Water Street. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this update.

Look out
Will the Martha’s Vineyard Commission allow the demolition of a house on Look Street in Tisbury? Well, that remains to be seen. The house in question is about 100 years old, but more important in the question is what the applicant hopes to replace the house with. Commissioners say the plans have to be more detailed and include precisely what the applicant intends to do. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.
MEETINGS
The Oak Bluffs select board meets at 4:30 pm Tuesday at town hall. Here is the agenda.

Quote of the Day
"This was a long journey to reach agreement. I was in the fortunate position to work with both our school committee employer group and our teacher group and I am extremely grateful for the work that was done on both sides — a lot of passionate, committed people. And fortunately, I think both sides really wanted to make sure we reached agreement and saw the longer we waited, the worse it felt, frankly."
–Schools superintendent Richie Smith on the contract settlement with the Martha’s Vineyard Educators Association

Hot Topic Comment
Jackie Mendez responded to a comment on the removal of Joe Capobianco as the facilities manager at Good Shepherd Parish. "Prayer is the reason given for taking away women’s rights, and not just in this country. Praying your brains out has nothing to do with doing what’s right. In this case it’s an excuse for lying about what you’re doing."

Hot Topic Letter
Ted Jochsberger, a member of the West Tisbury Affordable Housing Committee, doesn’t want the public to get the wrong impression of the work being done by that group. "Clearly there may be those who believe that the committee could do a better job. I would invite them to attend meetings and perhaps join the committee. It might be easier to offer criticism when sitting at the table than from the outside."
Today: Here’s a heads-up: You’ll notice when you click on events today, we’ve had a software update and the listings look a little different. I think they look better, but that’s just me. Bingo at the American Legion in Vineyard Haven. Play starts at 6:30 pm, but you want to get there earlier so you can chat and get yourself organized. Maybe get your snacks ready and choose your favorite dauber. –Connie Berry

This is right up my alley: The Haunted History of Lizzie Borden. Tim Weisberg, host of Spooky Southcoast, presents a virtual examination of the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, and the life Lizzie lived in Fall River. 7 pm. –C.B.
Tomorrow: I think that maybe they should offer this for adults, but until then take the kids to Drop-in Play-Doh Group at the Edgartown library. 10:30 am. –C.B.

Movies! Check out what’s playing at Island theaters here.

Ghost stories
Many people on Martha’s Vineyard claim to have witnessed something entirely unexplainable — something supernatural. What are these strange apparitions that seem to defy reality, and what creates them? A few Island authors and enthusiasts of all things paranormal and ghostly spoke with assistant features editor Lucas Thors about some of their experiences, and why they’re so fascinated with the spirit world. Read the recent story here.
