challenge For the first time in years, there is an open seat for the Cape and Islands District Attorney. Democrat Rob Galibois is facing off against Republican Dan Higgins to see who will replace longtime DA Michael O’Keefe. The Times asked both candidates what they would do to help police officers on the Island, how the office would deal with prosecuting nonviolent criminals; and even asked about Jan. 6 in Washington, D.C. Reporter Rich Saltzberg interviewed the two candidates. Here are their answers.
Paving paradise Well, not quite, but they did put up a parking lot next to the Stop & Shop in Vineyard Haven after the former Golden Dragon building was leveled. The town had ordered the building either be fixed or razed after finding it posed a safety hazard. Stop & Shop decided to take it down and is now looking to move the Caleb Prouty House, which can now be seen from Water Street. Reporter Rich Saltzberg has this update.
Look out Will the Martha’s Vineyard Commission allow the demolition of a house on Look Street in Tisbury? Well, that remains to be seen. The house in question is about 100 years old, but more important in the question is what the applicant hopes to replace the house with. Commissioners say the plans have to be more detailed and include precisely what the applicant intends to do. Reporter Abigail Rosen has this story.

Hot Topic Letter Ted Jochsberger, a member of the West Tisbury Affordable Housing Committee, doesn’t want the public to get the wrong
impression of the work being done by that group. "Clearly there may be those who believe that the committee could do a better job. I would invite them to attend meetings and perhaps join the committee. It might be easier to offer criticism when sitting at the table than from the outside."
